Improving Your Creative Confidence

As we’ve recently explored with two articles about gaining confidence after a breakup, and how to navigate tough times in life, putting yourself out there and keeping the flame of your self assurance lit can be hard to do.

Life is an unpredictable journey, and sometimes it’s tough. However, sometimes it’s amazing and nourishing as well. And having a sense of what’s possible can help us make the best of our potential. One way to encourage this is to invest in your own creativity. No matter how you choose to express it.

For some people, that may be through style. Maybe by wearing flat back jewelry studs as an accessory and part of a new makeover. For others, it might be having the confidence to open their own blog, sharing their own family journey or working through their opinions about the world.

No matter who you are, it’s healthy to invest a little in your own creativity. Let it become a lens through which you can explore who you are and make sense of the world. But it’s the easiest thing in the world to dismiss your own talent or insight. In this post, we’ll discuss how you can avoid that outcome.

Immerse Yourself In Art You Love

One of the best ways to help develop your own creativity is to surround yourself with the art, music or writing that moves you. It doesn’t have to be popular or critically acclaimed, just consider something that connects with you personally. Maybe make a playlist of songs that you’ve always loved.

Being inspired by the creativity of others can help to encourage your own. It might be a poem that sticks with you and encourages you to write a few lines of your own, or a painting that makes you want to pick up a brush. Don’t copy it, just use it as inspiration to make your own creation.

Express Who You Are, Your Passions And Loves

Art and creativity should thoroughly showcase your personality and who you are. John Steinbeck, for example, continually wrote about the Salinas Valley in California because that’s where he spent a great deal of his childhood. He included it in novels like East of Eden. Perhaps you could do something similar. Try writing about your local village or painting a landscape. Or try something simple like photographing of your pet.

Start Very Simply

It’s easy to doubt yourself when you think about creativity, especially if you’re not sure where to start. But you don’t need a grand plan or a lot of resources to get started. In fact the best art is made within creative constraints.

If you’re interested in writing, you don’t need to sit down and draft a novel. Start with a single sentence, or even just a list of words that come to mind. Or a cool character you want to outline. You could write a blog post like this one to practice your form. It doesn't matter how fast you go, it just matters that you are going.

These are just a few suggestions to help you feel more confident in creatively expressing yourself. Just jump right in and let your creative impulses guide you.
