Finding Affordable Housing in Salt Lake City

If you've ever had to pick up and move to a new area, you know how stressful it can be.  There are many reasons people decide to move to specific places:  you transfer there for your job, you have family there or you just visited and fell in love with the area.  Regardless of the reason, you will need to find an affordable place to live.  This is easier to do in some areas than in others.  A friend of mine recently made the move to Salt Lake City, Utah and the biggest challenge for her was finding a new home.

While visiting her brother, who lives in Salt Lake City, Jenny and Mike fell in love with the area and decided to move there as well.  Being writers, they are lucky enough to have the kind of jobs that can done from anywhere as long as they have a computer.  They didn't have to worry about the hassle of finding employment, so they put their things in storage and stayed with her brother while they searched for a home of their own.  This proved to be a little tricky since Salt Lake City is the most populous city in Utah.

They planned to buy a home, but after consulting local realtors and discovering how expensive that was, they decided to rent instead.  That's when they discovered Zumper.  You can use Zumper to find houses, rooms, condos or apartments for rent.  When you find something you're interested in, you can use their screening service to submit a digital rental application and credit report online.  This is especially great because you can do everything online.

According to Zumper, the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in Salt Lake City, UT is currently $1,206.  This is a 10% increase compared to the previous year.  Recent data by Zumper shows 50% of housing units are renter occupied in Salt Lake City.  Through the Zumper website, Jenny and Mike learned that the most affordable neighborhoods in Salt Lake City are Glendale, Liberty Wells and Poplar grove.  The most expensive neighborhoods are Fairpark, People's Freeway and Rio Grande.  And the most popular neighborhoods are Central City, Sugar House and East Central.  This information was a tremendous help because it gave them an idea where they should begin their search.

The Zumper inventory is updated in real time, so you'll see new rentals as soon as they are listed.  You can filter your search by location, price range, bedroom count, if it's pet friendly, or amenity to find the perfect home of your dreams at the best price.  You can also set an alert to get notifications when a new listing is posted, so you won't miss anything.

Once you find your new home, it's time to move in!  Jenny and Mike quickly found the perfect apartment in Liberty Wells that's pet friendly, which was a must because they have a beautiful dog.  There's even a dog park just down the street!  They hired a local moving company to move their furniture and belongings for them and are now happily settling in to their new home.

Naturally, I miss my friends, but I'm happy that they have found a home that they love.  They've informed me that they have a guest room that is just waiting for my husband and me to come visit, so I am looking forward to going in late spring or early summer.  I've heard that Salt Lake City is beautiful ... full of nature, culture, shopping and more.  I'm really looking forward to finding out for myself, while spending time and making memories with my dear friends!  They've promised to take us to a nearby lake where we can camp, fish and enjoy the fresh outdoor air.  Being with the man that I love and friends that I adore, breathing fresh air and splashing in cool water while looking up at fluffy white clouds in a clear blue sky ... sounds like Heaven to me!
