The poinsettia is a traditional Christmas plant that was brought back from Taco, Mexico by the first US Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett. He started growing them in South Carolina and he would pass them along to friends and botanical gardens nearby. One of those friends, Robert Buist, was a Pennsylvania plantsman - and he started reproducing them as cut flowers. Poinsettias are associated with Christmas because the "flowers" (which are really leaves called "bracts" that turn color as the days get shorter during the fall and winter months) bloom during the holiday season.
