If you're not already using one, you should try a boar hair brush!

My husband gave me this brush for my birthday this year and I absolutely love it!  It is made with boar hair as well as the traditional plastic bristles.  The boar hair is shorter than the plastic bristles.  My hair is really long and tangles easily.  This brush goes through the tangles in my hair without pulling it as much as a regular brush does.  And it leaves my hair shiny, soft and more managable.  If I brush my hair with this before going to bed, my hair is still soft and smooth in the morning.  I've found that it doesn't tangle as much during the night if I use this brush before bedtime.  My brush is a larger one, but they also come in smaller sizes.  My husband has one to brush his beard with.  You can buy them in beauty salons or department stores.  If you haven't tried one yet, I highly recommend you do!
